Book Summary:

“... a mythical tale as appealing as it is impressive.”—Kirkus Reviews A half-faerie without wings, Melia lives as an outcast in the enchanted world. After her mortal father breaks his faerie troth, Melia's faerie mother returns to the Realm of Faerie with her three daughters. Her father is forbidden to join them. Determined to reunite with his beloved wife, he becomes obsessed with harnessing a sinister consciousness dwelling in the Void. Fearful she’s been tainted by his contact with darkness, Melia seeks aid from the Illustrator. The mysterious woman marks the half-faerie's forehead with an unusual emblem meant to draw aid from a distant land. Before help arrives, Melia travels to the mortal world to confront her father. A tragedy ensues and Melia's mother is strangely unforgiving. The punishment she metes out will leave her daughter torn between guilt and ecstasy, challenge the bonds between three sisters, and complicate Melia's relationship with a young green-eyed priest who unexpectedly arrives Faerie. Whimsical and edgy, Daughter of Light is an epic fantasy with an intriguing cosmology and well-developed characters. Readers who have enjoyed Lord of the Rings, Throne of Glass, and the Rain Wilds Chronicles will likely enjoy this series. Praise for the Daughter of Light fantasy trilogy: Isolt’s Enchantment, the beginnings (Free Prequel) I loved the beauty of the world when Vulcan first meets Una, and I especially enjoyed the explanation of Umbra. Isolt’s vengeance was absolutely delicious, and I could recommend this book based solely on that scene.—Erica at Fantasy Book Lane Half Faerie, Book 1 I found myself sharing emotions with several characters and my husband would walk by just shaking his head, he doesn’t understand books and what they can do. I highly recommend this book. I want to thank Heidi Garrett for making my otherwise boring life so exciting with her books, I am loving it, every single minute! Five stars for Half Faerie. —KJ at Kj Reads A Lot Half Mortal, Book 2 The pace picks up quite a bit as the stakes are raised in Half Mortal, the second book in this epic coming of age fantasy trilogy. I can totally understand why the comparison to LoTR has been drawn, as Melia and her cohorts battle numerous foes as they attempt to make things right- in both realms.—Mama Reads, Hazel Reads War & Grace, Book 3 Coming in November 2017!

Book Summary:

The doctorial thesis argues that the term Subcreation with its revised and broadened definition, in part differing from J.R.R. Tolkien's original term sub-creation, may be used for the discussion of the making of fictional worlds in literary discourse. The successful conception of a fictional world depends on the reader's willing suspension of disbelief. This depends both on the author and his skilled composition of the world and all its aspects, as well as on the reader's acceptance of this invented fictional world. The author needs to create a narrative with an inner consistency, which is crucial to achieving the effect of the reader's immersion in the fictional world. The fundamental aspects that an author needs to realize to achieve successful Subcreation have been structured into and analysed in four categories: Language and Linguistic Variation, Physiopoeia, Anthropoeia and Mythopoeia. Furthermore, this thesis shows that, as contemporary examples of fantastic literature, both Tad Williams's and Terry Pratchett's fictional worlds are successfully created through the realization of these aspects of Subcreation. Apart from commenting on the success of the subcreative process, this thesis also remarks upon the cultural influences both authors include in their writings. While both may be considered Anglophone in a general categorization, Pratchett's Discworld retains a feeling of 'Britishness' that is not to be found in Williams's Otherland. The thesis proposes several approaches to Subcreation that may be studied subsequently. So, for example, it may be possible to determine the success of an author's Subcreation by collecting empirical data. Apart from literary works this field of studies may also include other media.

She had been in slumber several hundred years, healing from a near fatal blow in a great war. Now, she had to go talk to him to determine what kind of payment he would extract from her for his protection while she slept. She had no coin. Not knowing what type of payment he would demand from her had her heart twisted in torment. Aisling didn’t trust anyone. Too many had betrayed her. And when she refused to speak with the king, Devon ordered her to go to his castle. He would make her listen to reason. Matt arrived at the castle before Devon, but what he wasn’t expecting to find was his mate. And because of his title, he couldn’t get her to rise from groveling on the ground at his feet to even talk to her. When his dragon realized his mate was in front of him, the Earth dragon bypassed the man and bonded with the white dragon. The joining was both painful and spectacular. In pain, Aisling’s dragon, no longer white, took flight. When Matt finally found her, Aisling was no longer timid. She was mad as hell and out for blood.

Werewolves, vampires, fae? She doesn’t believe in any of it. She’s blissfully ignorant of all the things that stalk her. Rowan has never gotten along with Yuti, but when she comes into the café smelling like vampire, he needs to get close to her fast to find out what’s going on. Yuti has no idea why the local café’s barista is suddenly interested in all aspects of her life, but he’s getting a little too pushy for her liking. Will this fiercely independent human let Rowan protect her, or is it already too late?

Book Summary:

Bohemia at the beginning of the 15th century: The people of a small village have survived the terrible plague. Weak, hungry and desperate, they abandon the caves in which they found refuge from the pest. They are pinched by poverty for the fields lay unsown – and the winter is coming. Even their noble lord on the nearby castle is suffering. Fortunately, he still has the treasure, which he stole together with other robber knights before the plague struck. When he wants to use it to battle the hardship, he realises to his horror that the chests filled with gold and jewels are gone. He could lose his life over this! In the meantime, precious items are showing up in and around the village time and again, and the villagers claim a troll is the source of their small wealth. The young, educated village priest Martin along with Janek, the noble lord’s son, find this superstition very intriguing: Who stole the treasure? Who is this mysterious benefactor in the forest? Can the two men unveil the truth and ward off the consequences of greed and superstition that has been growing in Janovice since the beginning of the outbreak of the pest?

Book Summary:

I’m Ivy Lane, and if I never see another faerie again, it’ll be too soon. Twenty years after the faeries came and destroyed the world as we knew it, I use my specialist skills to keep rogue faeries in line and ensure humans and their magically gifted neighbours can coexist (relatively) peacefully. Nobody knows those skills came from the darkest corner of Faerie itself. When a human child disappears, replaced with a faerie changeling, I have to choose between taking the safe road or exposing my own history with the faeries to the seductively dangerous head of the Mage Lords. He’s the exact kind of distraction I don’t need, but it’s work with him or lose my chance to save the victims. It’ll take all my skills to catch the kidnappers and stop Faerie’s dark denizens overrunning the city — but if the faerie lords find out about the magic I stole last time I went into their realm, running won’t save me this time… This boxed set contains the first three books in the Changeling Chronicles series: Faerie Blood, Faerie Magic and Faerie Realm.

Book Summary:

Transported to a medieval realm of magic and myth, a World War II resistance fighter undertakes a perilous quest in this classic fantasy adventure. Holger Carlsen is a rational man of science. A Danish engineer working with the Resistance to defeat the Nazis, he is wounded during an engagement with the enemy and awakens in an unfamiliar parallel universe where the forces of Law are locked in eternal combat with the forces of Chaos. Against a medieval backdrop, brave knights must take up arms against magical creatures of myth and faerie, battling dragons, trolls, werewolves, and giants. Though Holger has no recollection of this world, he discovers he is already well-known throughout the lands, a hero revered as a Champion of Law. He finds weaponry and armor awaiting him—precisely fitted to his form—and a shield with three hearts and three lions emblazoned upon it. As he journeys through a realm filled with wonders in search of the key to his past, Holger will call upon the scientific knowledge of his home dimension, the destinies of both worlds hanging in the balance. Before Thomas Covenant, Roger Zelazny’s Amber, and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the great Poul Anderson introduced readers to the Middle World and the legendary hero Ogier the Dane. Inventive and exciting, Three Hearts and Three Lions is a foray into fantasy that employs touches of science fiction from an award-winning master of the speculative.

Book Summary:

Hazel Lynn has spent her entire life preparing to take on the role of Gatekeeper between the Summer Court and the mortal realm. With her entire family bound into service to Faerie, she doesn’t exactly have a choice in the matter, but she's made it her mission to keep the peace between humans and fae -- enforced by her blade, if necessary. Her plans go sideways when she's called to take on the deadly Gatekeeper's Trials and assigned a stuck-up half-fae mentor who hates humans like her. He might be pretty to look at, but he has no intention of giving her an easy time of it. But things go from bad to dire when the King of the Summer Court is assassinated. Worse, all the signs point to a human being responsible. Since Hazel and her family are the only humans permitted to enter the King's domain, the blame lands squarely on them. Before long, Hazel's aggravating new mentor is the only person in Faerie she can trust not to sentence her to death on the spot… assuming he isn't the murderer himself. With her loved ones' fates resting in her hands, it's up to Hazel to catch the killer before the vengeful Sidhe take out their wrath on the rest of humanity.

Hazel's first task as Gatekeeper is to find both of them, and save the heir of Summer before the Courts fall into chaos.
